Why I train

Published by Scott at 4:12 pm under Personal

There has been some debate a while back about the purpose of training etc.; and while all are valid for the individual of course I decided to add a few thoughts of my own.

Every one comes to the table with an opinion as to the purpose of training Uechi-ryu. Recently I added a poll on the front page of the journal asking what people’s goals were, the results were a little surprising:

  • Compete lifestyle: 35.4%
  • Hobby: 19.35%
  • Fitness: 16.13%
  • Self protection: 12.9%
  • Competition: 12.9%
  • Own a dojo: 3.2%
  • Of course this is not a scientific poll, just a survey from those who visited the main page and voted.

What surprised me is that self-protection (the original purpose of Uechi-ryu Karate) ranked forth.

Personally I train for this reason, to protect myself and my family. I was digging through some summer photos I had stored on my hard drive and found one that I really liked. In my opinion this photo shows the essence of Karate practice/teaching (for me anyhow).
